Julia is a ceramicist and landscape architect. She originally trained at Edinburgh College of Art, gaining a Masters in Design in 1992. She then combined working in the field of public art with lecturing in ceramics.
She retrained as a landscape architect in 2006, where she specialised in designing quirky and original play areas. Recently she has returned to the field of ceramics, now focusing on work at a domestic scale.
Statement
My work aims to reveal the stories hidden in the landscape around us and beneath our feet. The work on show from The Three Meadows project celebrates the diversity of old hay meadows, walking across three different farms in Devon gathering and impressing into clay all the plant species found on one day in June.
I will be in residence during the Out of Nature exhibition developing this idea of gathering, giving myself the task of making a new piece each day in response to a shape, gesture, form or object noticed on a daily walk through the gardens and grounds. Visitors will be able to take part in workshops where they can also make a simple platter or bowl using impressions from plants gathered in the grounds of Newport House.
