Following an idyllic rural childhood surrounded by livestock, Rachel is now a smallholder, mother of three and prolific artist/maker.
When you encounter one of her metal characters, you feel rather than see a truth or rightness of form and balance within it. She is not an artist striving for realism or dramatic action but one who clearly bonds in a deeper, even spiritual way with her subject. It is a delight to see her ‘sense of life’ rather than a picture of something that lived.
Statement
My passion is wildlife and the world around us. I feel a special connection with birds in particular, their displaying, gathering, building, brooding and flight. It’s an accidental but quite accurate metaphor for the creative process I initiate. I project myself into the subject (or perhaps the other way round?) until somehow, wonderfully, there is a personality held in metal before me.
